Creative Therapeutic Work in Counselling | Swansea & Online Across the UK

Sometimes, words alone don’t feel enough.

There are moments when emotions are difficult to explain, experiences feel too overwhelming to put into sentences, or you simply know something doesn’t feel right but can’t quite describe it. Creative therapeutic work can help us explore these experiences in different ways, offering new perspectives and deeper understanding.

As an integrative counsellor based in Swansea, I offer creative therapeutic approaches alongside traditional talking therapy. Sessions are available both in person and online across the UK, with every intervention tailored to your individual needs and comfort level.

What Is Creative Therapeutic Work?

Creative therapeutic work uses imagination, symbolism, reflection, and expressive techniques to help explore thoughts, emotions, behaviours, and life experiences.

Rather than relying solely on conversation, we might use creative approaches to access feelings that are difficult to verbalise, identify recurring patterns, or gain insight into challenges from a different perspective.

These techniques are always optional. There is never any expectation to be artistic, creative, or “good” at drawing. The focus isn’t on creating something beautiful—it’s about discovering what your own experiences, thoughts, and feelings might be communicating.

Every person is different, and together we’ll decide what feels most helpful for you.

Artwork Exploration

For some people, creating or exploring simple artwork can provide another way of expressing thoughts and feelings that are difficult to put into words.

This isn’t about artistic ability, and there is no expectation to produce finished pieces of art. The value lies in the process rather than the outcome.

We might use simple drawing, colours, shapes, collage, or visual imagery as starting points for conversation and reflection. These creative exercises can help uncover emotions, identify patterns, explore relationships, or connect with different parts of yourself in a gentle and meaningful way.

Creative work is always offered as an option—not a requirement. If talking is what feels most helpful, that is where we’ll focus.

Using Metaphor to Deepen Understanding

Sometimes a metaphor can express something that ordinary language cannot.

You might describe feeling as though you're "carrying the weight of the world," "stuck in quicksand," or "wearing a mask." Exploring these images together can reveal important insights into how you experience yourself and your relationships.

Metaphors can help make overwhelming emotions feel more understandable and provide a gentle way to explore complex experiences without needing to explain everything directly.

Together, we'll stay curious about the language and images that naturally arise for you.

Gestalt Techniques

Gestalt-informed approaches focus on increasing awareness of your present experience and helping you notice patterns in your thoughts, emotions, body sensations, and relationships.

Depending on what feels appropriate, we may use techniques such as:

  • Empty chair work
  • Dialogue between different parts of yourself
  • Exploring unfinished business
  • Increasing awareness of emotions and bodily sensations
  • Experiential exercises that encourage new perspectives

These techniques aren’t about putting you on the spot or making you perform. They are invitations to explore experiences safely and collaboratively, always with your consent and at a pace that feels comfortable.

My Integrative Approach

As an integrative counsellor, I don't believe that one approach works for everyone. My work is rooted in person-centred counselling, providing a warm, collaborative, and non-judgemental relationship where you are free to explore your experiences at your own pace. Alongside this, I draw on a range of therapeutic approaches, including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), psychoeducation, existential ideas, and creative therapeutic techniques when they support your goals. Every session is shaped around you. Some clients prefer traditional talking therapy, while others find creative exploration opens up new possibilities for understanding themselves. We can adapt our work together as your needs change.

Why Use Creative Approaches?

Creative therapeutic work can be especially helpful if you:

  • Find it difficult to express emotions verbally.
  • Feel disconnected from your thoughts or feelings.
  • Experience anxiety or overwhelming emotions.
  • Want to better understand recurring patterns or relationships.
  • Are processing trauma or significant life experiences.
  • Feel stuck and would like to explore challenges from a different perspective.
  • Enjoy reflective or imaginative ways of working.

Creative techniques can complement talking therapy by offering new ways of understanding yourself and supporting meaningful personal growth.
